Culture

Iznájar is a classical "pueblo blanco", or white village and it is surrounded by its 18 small villages.
Although in Iznájar there has not been found many archeological sites, it's known that in Fuente del Conde and Los Pechos, there are Iberian and Roman settlements. There are beautiful farmhouses of large history that go back to the 18th century (for example, Los Pechos farmhouse) and the Christian reconquest (1492, with the Granada conquest by the Catholic Kings).
Of the archeological sites previously quoted, they are presented here, the named “Cerro de la Pía”, it's located in Cierzos and Cabreras. This Roman settlement has remained unpublished to date, in spite of it, it was found very close to the city center. It's one of the most important of the limit as much in superficial area and in proximity to the villa. It is located to 2 kilometers approximately.
In addition, there are some Muslim remains in Iznájar ( considering that it was Muslim territory during al- Ándalus) , as the castle of Hisn-Ashar and other sites.
The name of Iznájar comes from the Arabian Hisn-Ashar which means “happy castle”.
Other places you can see in this town are:
  • Renaissance church of Apostle Santiago.
  • “Nuestra Señora de la Piedad” chapel whose Virgin is the patron saint of the town.
  • San José church.
  • Clock tower.
  • San Rafael tower.
  • The Ville.
  • “Mirador del Genil” high school.
  • Magán shrine (Fuente del Conde).
  • Valdearenas beach.
  • Ventanas mountain range.

Easter

Unsurprisingly, Semana Santa, Easter week, is the most important festival here. Perhaps uniquely, townsfolk come together to present a religious theatrical epic in which amateur thespians take on the roles of figures in key scenes from the bible and the crucifixion.

Twelfth night

In Iznájar, every year we celebrate a night in which the children are the protagonists. This night we make a procession with people who dress up like the three kings and celebrate that the three kings come to all the houses and bring presents for the families.

Fair of Saint Piedad

Iznájar's annual September fair usually takes place from September 7-10.
It’s a fair in which people of Iznájar celebrate a beautiful procession in which the Virgin of Piedad is the protagonist because she is the patron saint of Iznájar. Apart from this fair they do another small fair too but it’s one of the most important and popular celebration of Iznájar; so many people come to see the procession and somebody make it without shoes, this is incredible because the procession is too long.

Other celebrations

Saint Blas: This day people buy a "rosca" whichit is a type of bread that people only eat this day.
Saint Marcos: This celebration is only held by the people who live in some villages of Córdoba and Málaga and people from Iznájar normally go to the Valdearenas beach to be with their families and stay there all the day or all the weekend.
Saint Isidro: In saint Isidro they celebrate a romeria in which people go from Iznájar to Valdearenas in a procession.
