The name of 'Iznájar' comes from the Arabic name 'Hins Ashar'. It means 'Happy Castle'. The origin of Iznájar is associated with the castle, in the eight century, when the Arabics had expanded around Spain.

The castle was built in many phases. The first phase was Islamic, in the tenth century. In 1362, Pedro I did extensions. After, in 1368 the castle was expanded again by Muhamad V. In the fifteenth century, Pedro Fernandez de Córdoba conquered the castle and built the first houses. He created four doors for gaining admission to the village. A well was built in the fortress. Pedro Fernandez built the Renaissance church 'Santiago Apostol'. In the eighteenth century, the era of Carlos III, the present library was built (for storing cereals).
